Red Cross Disaster Assistance
Each year, the American Red Cross responds immediately to more than 70,000 disasters,
including house or apartment fires (the majority of disaster
responses), hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous
materials spills, transportation accidents, explosions, and other
natural and man-made disasters.
|
When Red Cross volunteers respond to a local emergency, they help families take their next step from crisis to stability. Red Cross assistance can include:
- Emergency shelter, food, and emotional counseling to address basic human needs affected or eliminated due to disasters.
- Basic assistance such as groceries, new clothing, temporary housing,
medicines, emergency home repairs, transporation and basic household
items.
- Help with long-term recovery when other resources, such
as insurance benefits and government assistance, are not available or
are inadequate to meet disaster-caused needs.
- Information and referrals to help those affected obtain other resources.
- Aide in emergency communication between disaster victims and family members located outside the disaster area.
For more information about disaster assistance, call 412-263-3100.
