Client Services Intern
Full or part-time
Position Summary:
Client Services Interns will be responsible for guiding and supporting disaster clients in their disaster recovery process. Reports to the Director of Emergency Services.
Responsibilities:
Provide assistance with and support of the following:
- Updating and maintaining client records
- Identifying and building relationships with potential social service agencies for referrals
- Assisting with daily office activities
- Assisting with walk-in clients
Requirements:
- Successfully completed background check
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Eagerness to work with diverse populations
- Ability to travel and work in downtown Pittsburgh office
Training Required at the Start of the Internship:
- Orientation to the American Red Cross (on-line)
- Introduction to Disaster Services (on-line)
- Client Casework Training - free (7.5 hours)
- Standard First Aid/CPR course - free (6.5 hours)
Time Commitment:
- Summer Internship: 3 months, 30 - 40 hours/week
- Fall and Spring Internship: 6 months, 10 - 20 hours/week

Fundraising and Event Intern

Position Summary:
The American Red Cross Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter seeks an enthusiastic, confident intern to assist with special events and other fundraising activities. This opportunity is excellent for an undergraduate or recent graduate to become familiar with event planning and fundraising in a nonprofit setting.
Responsibilities:
Provide assistance with and support of:
- Solicit and assist with managing auction item procurement for the Red Cross Ball
- Assist with logistical planning of the Red Cross Ball
- Manage canning efforts and other grassroots fundraising initiatives
- Cultivate relationships with schools and community groups to promote third party events
- Investigate new fundraising opportunities for the Chapter
- Assist in overall Financial Development operations and planning
- Assist with other projects as needed
Requirements:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Comfortable soliciting donations in a face-to-face setting
- Reliable transportation, ability to travel to offsite locations
- Knowledge of basic Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, etc)
Time Commitment:
The Red Cross will work with you on creating a schedule that meets your needs. Business hours are between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Health and Safety Sales/Administration Internship

Position Summary:
The Health and Safety Department at the American Red Cross Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter is looking for interns who are eager to work in a sales-related environment.
The Health and Safety Department manages the sales, distribution and organization of safety-related products and services - such as First Aid Kits and CPR training courses - which help the region prevent, prepare and respond to emergencies. Because of the department’s diverse responsibilities, the position will provide interns with an opportunity to perform a wide-range of tasks.
Interns will gain an in-depth understanding of the daily operations of the department by observing and participating in sales calls once a week and fulfilling a number of administrative responsibilities during the remaining days. Reports to the Director of Health and Safety.
Responsibilities:
Provide assistance with and support of the following:
- Attend in-person sales calls alongside department Sales Representative once a week
- Observe the Sales Representative’s conversations with customers and distributors
- Complete administrative tasks such as answering phones, generating reports, and maintaining department records
- Assist with daily office activities
Requirements:
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Interest in sales or sales-related fields
- Desire to gain a hands-on understanding
- Eagerness to learn from others
- Administrative background preferred

Marketing and Communications Intern
Full or part-time
Position Summary:
The Marketing and Communications Department seeks to measurably increase public understanding and support of the American Red Cross. Reports to Marketing and Communications Coordinator.
Responsibilities:
Provide assistance with and support of the following:
- Writing and distributing news releases
- Assisting with media relations, possibly during times of disasters
- Designing marketing materials and coordinating professional printing of them
- Producing additional promotional materials (print, audio, video)
- Distributing information both internally and externally
- Representing the Red Cross at community and chapter events
- Taking photography for the chapter
- Researching, assisting with administrative support, and completing other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Successfully completed background check
- Coursework toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or Journalism
- Demonstrated interest in public relations or marketing and involvement at school or in extra-curricular activities
- Strong computer skills, willingness to learn, flexibility, and enthusiasm

Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) Intern
Full or part-time
Position Summary:
SAF interns assist the Red Cross in providing emergency messages to military family members and military personnel. Works with the SWPA Chapter Emergency Services Volunteers, paid staff, and general public. Reports to SAF Coordinator.
Responsibilities:
Provide assistance with and support of the following:
- Promoting SAF programs to military family members and military personnel in our community
- Providing accurate messages and verification for military family members and military personnel to other Red Cross stations, centers, and military authorities
- Providing referral services to military family members and military personnel
- Making outgoing SAF calls
- Assisting with other projects related to SAF
Requirements:
- Successfully completed background check
- Basic command of proper grammar
- Comfortable with public speaking
- Excellent communication skills
- Eagerness to work with diverse populations
- Competence in using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point software
Training Required at the Start of the Internship:
- Orientation to the American Red Cross (online)
Time Commitment:
Any time between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, as well as some evenings and weekends
