Retired & Senior Volunteer Program

The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Allegheny County, locally sponsored by the American Red Cross, enables people 55 and older to contribute to their community through volunteer service.

Over 700 volunteers currently help their communities by serving at hospitals, daycare centers, schools, and consumer agencies. For seniors who prefer varied assignments, the Variety Club allows them to volunteer in many different places through temporary assignments.

RSVP helps older adults use their skills and experiences to assist others in their community and to increase their own personal satisfaction and enrichment.  In addition to providing important services to their community, volunteers receive free benefits, such as supplemental accident and liability insurance, transportation reimbursements, recognition, and other benefits through RSVP.

Here are some of the current volunteer opportunities available through the RSVP office:

  • Mentor youth in life skills, math, computers, and finance.
  • Teach ESL (English as a Second Language) to adults.
  • Drive/deliver meals to the homebound or make reassurance calls.
  • Teach computer skills to seniors.
  • Support the mission of the American Red Cross in times of disaster by assisting victims with sheltering and resources.
