Red Cross Offers Resources for Emergency Preparedness and Supporting Local Military
WHO: Your American Red Cross Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter and partner in emergency preparedness WHAT: Resources and services available from the American Red Cross WHY: The U.S. has again raised the national terror threat level from "elevated" to "high" -- "yellow" to "orange" on the government's warning system and has recommended citizens be prepared for unexpected emergencies. HOW: The American Red Cross offers numerous services and resources to prepare for uncertain times: American Red Cross Armed Forces Emergency Services When the U.S prepares for or is actively engaged in war, the need for American Red Cross support to military families increases substantially. The American Red Cross assists U.S. military service members and their families 24-hours a day by: 1) linking military personnel to their families back home through an extensive and widespread emergency communications network; 2) if needed, mobilizing and deploying trained workers to provide emergency communication and other essential services that meet the requirements of military personnel deployed into areas of conflict overseas; and 3) reaching out to our men and women in uniform and their families with information about American Red Cross services available to them. Resources for Preparing for Emergencies The Red Cross recommends everyone be prepared for any unexpected emergency, usually a natural disaster like a winter storm, fire or flood. We offer numerous resources for getting prepared, such as: Emergency Preparedness Brochures: Your Family Disaster Plan Your Family Disaster Supplies Kit Food & Water in an Emergency Preparing for the Unexpected These resources can be accessed by: Emergency Preparedness Hotline (888) 217-9599 For requesting the above-mentioned brochures Brochures are free for individuals and families; a nominal fee is charged for requests for more than 25 pieces Web Local - swpa.redcross.org National - www.redcross.org Free Training in "Preparing for the Unexpected" Now more than ever, the Red Cross is encouraging people to develop emergency response plans for their homes, workplaces and schools, so that they know how to respond to an act of terror or any other emergency that might occur. The local SWPA Chapter is offering, free of charge, training in "Preparing for the Unexpected." This 1 hour presentation addresses issues such as family and workplace emergency communications plans, building a disaster supplies kit, first aid training, and more. This free training is being offered at the Chapter every Friday from noon until 1 p.m. Call the Emergency Preparedness Hotline at (888) 217-9599 to register and for more information. The American Red Cross Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter is dedicated to keeping the families and communities of Allegheny and Washington Counties safe. A humanitarian service organization currently servicing more than 1.5 million people, the American Red Cross Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter annually mobilizes relief to the victims of more than 300 emergencies and speeds emergency messages to more than 2,600 U.S. service members and their loved ones. The American Red Cross trains more than 50,000 people in vital lifesaving skills such as First Aid and CPR.
