RED CROSS HELPS 11 FAMILIES AFFECTED BY BRIGHTON HEIGHTS FIRE: Asks that other affected families seek help
PITTSBURGH –American Red Cross Volunteers are helping 11 families - 23 individuals - this morning as a result of a fire at a lumber yard in the Brighton Heights section of the North Side. The families are receiving assistance for their emergency-caused needs; including food, clothing and a place to stay. Red Cross assessed that the fire affected 14 structures. Damage assessments by the Red Cross are done to understand the full extent of individual needs. The American Red Cross is asking any other family affected by the fire to visit them at the Risen Lord Church on 3250 California Avenue until 1 p.m. today. There, families can learn what assistance may be available to them. Assistance from the Red Cross is offered on a case-by-case basis and is in response to the unique needs of each family. In the last year, the local Red Cross has responded to 212 emergencies, mostly house fires. The Red Cross has helped 1,017 local individuals with emergency assistance, providing a temporary means for families to start their disaster recovery. NOTE: All Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from people in this community. The American Red Cross Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter is dedicated to keeping the families and communities of Allegheny and Washington Counties safe - annually mobilizing relief to victims of more than 300 disasters ever year and sending nearly 1,000 emergency messages to U.S. service members separated from loved ones. The local American Red Cross trains more than 45,000 people in vital lifesaving skills such as First Aid and CPR, and supports senior volunteer services like the Foster Grandparent Program and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. LOCAL RED CROSS HOSTS LIFEGUARD TRAINING SCHOOL
American Red Cross Offers Lifeguard Certification and Other Water Safety Courses at May Aquatic School
WHO: American Red Cross Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter WHAT: 2003 Aquatic School WHEN: Beginning Lifeguards: May 8 – 11 (Session A) and May 15-18 (Session B) Lifeguard Recertification: May 9-11 (Session A) and May 16-18 (Session B) Other classes will be offered – CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard Instructor and Water Safety Instructor – call for details. WHERE: University of Pittsburgh Trees Hall Pool WHY: In an attempt to curtail what is fast becoming a national shortage of lifeguards, the local American Red Cross chapter is seeking swimmers interested in becoming summer lifeguards to go through its certification courses.
