Give a Valentine’s Day Gift for the Heart: Learn How to Save a Life through the American Red Cross
Give a Valentine’s Day Gift for the Heart: Learn How to Save a Life through the American Red Cross
PITTSBURGH, PA – Would you know what to do if a loved one or co-worker were to suffer a heart attack? Sudden cardiac arrests can occur without warning in the home, place of work, or other public locations. American Red Cross CPR training can provide the knowledge of how to respond to an emergency and how you could help save a life. Victims of a sudden cardiac arrest usually need an electric shock called defibrillation to restore the heart to a regular rhythm. Chance of survival decreases by 10% each minute defibrillation is delayed. Automated external defibrillators (AED) could save as many as 50,000 of the 220,000 lives lost each year to sudden cardiac arrest. The American Red Cross Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter offers AED training in its CPR courses. This Valentine's Day, learn how to protect yourself and your loved ones by enrolling in a CPR/AED class with your family, friends or co-workers or give the gift of a class to someone else. As AEDs become more readily available to the public in the workplace, malls, airplanes and hotels, the American Red Cross is urging people to learn how to operate these devices. American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED programs are designed to give you the confidence to respond in an emergency with lifesaving skills. Programs are available for any age and can be tailored to the needs of specific groups and individuals. The American Red Cross trains individuals in adult CPR/AED to provide care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Using AED equipment, the courses feature hands-on simulation, lecture, and live and video demonstrations. The CPR/AED course is also included in courses covering infant and child CPR as well as standard First Aid practices. For more information about the courses available contact the American Red Cross Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter at 1-888-217-9599 or visit swpa.redcross.org. The American Red Cross of Southwestern Pennsylvania serves over 1.6 million people in Allegheny, Washington, Greene and Fayette counties. Locally, the Red Cross provides relief to the victims of more than 300 disasters each year, facilitates more than 2,600 emergency messages between our deployed men and women in uniform and their loved ones here at home, as well as trains more than 50,000 individuals in vital lifesaving skills. The American Red Cross in Southwestern Pennsylvania is honored to support two senior volunteer programs, The Foster Grandparent Program and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, as well as the Homeless Prevention Services of Washington County. The American Red Cross is not a government agency, nor does it receive funding from its national headquarters except during times of large-scale disasters. It is only through the generosity of the people of southwestern Pennsylvania that the local Red Cross is able fulfill its mission to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters and other lifesaving emergencies. To make a donation of time or treasure, contact the American Red Cross of Southwestern Pennsylvania by phone at 1-888-217-9599, by mail at 225 Boulevard of the Allies, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15222 or online at swpa.redcross.org.
